After checking into your traditional Riad, the afternoon is dedicated to exploring the legendary, spiritual heart of the city: the Fes el-Bali medina. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, this labyrinthine old city is the world’s largest living medieval Islamic city, best experienced with a local guide who can lead you through its endless maze of alleys. You will explore key historical and religious sites like the Bou Inania Madrasa and the famous Chouara Tannery.
End your day with a traditional dinner and an overnight stay in Fes, resting up for the long drive ahead.
Overnight: Riad/Hotel in Fes
Meals: Breakfast included
Day 2: Fes – Ifrane – Cedar Forest – Merzouga Desert
Break your fast at your riad and prepare for the longest journey, yet most scenic, travel day as you cross the Middle and High Atlas Mountains toward the Sahara Desert.
This full-day drive will take you through dramatic landscape changes. Stops will include Ifrane, often called “Little Switzerland” for its alpine style, and the Cedar Forest, where you might spot native Barbary apes. You will continue south, passing through the stark, beautiful landscape of Midelt, before descending into the oasis-filled Ziz Valley, with its stunning gorges and palm groves.
Upon arrival in the desert town of Merzouga in the afternoon, you will switch to a camel for a magical trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes. The camel ride typically lasts about an hour, timed perfectly to witness a spectacular Saharan sunset. You will then arrive at your desert camp for a traditional Berber dinner under the stars, followed by an evening of drumming around a campfire before spending the night in a traditional tent.
Day 3: Merzouga Desert – Rissani – Todra Gorges – Boumalne Dades
Wake up early to witness the spectacular desert sunrise over the dunes before enjoying a camp breakfast. Afterward, you will travel back out of the desert to begin your journey toward the Dades Valley.
Your first major stop will be Rissani, known as the last major commercial center before the desert and the historical birthplace of the Alawite dynasty. The route continues through the stunning Todra Gorge, a massive fault that slices through the Atlas Mountains, forming a towering canyon with walls that rise hundreds of meters high, perfect for a short walk. From there, you will drive through the lush Todra Valley before reaching the Dades Valley .
The road into the valley is famous for its winding switchbacks and dramatic scenery known as the “Monkey Fingers,” where you will arrive at your accommodation for the night, nestled among the towering red rock formations of the Dades Gorges.
Overnight: Hotel or Riad in Dades Valley
Meals: Dinner & Breakfast included
Day 4: Boumalne Dades – Rose Valley – Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech
After breakfast, your final day of travel begins as you head towards Marrakech. The first part of the drive is along the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs,” passing through the Rose Town of Kelaat M’Gouna, famous for its annual Rose Festival and its abundant rose-based products.
You will then reach Ouarzazate, the region’s main city and Morocco’s “Hollywood,” known for its film studios and historic Kasbahs. The highlight of the day is a visit to the famous Ait Benhaddou , a fortified clay village and UNESCO World Heritage site that has served as a backdrop for countless Hollywood epics.
After exploring the Kasbah, you will begin the spectacular, winding ascent over the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260m). The pass offers breathtaking panoramic views of the mountains and valleys before you descend to the plains. Your journey concludes with your evening drop-off at your final accommodation in Marrakech.
